Definition of Sabbat

Sabbats (1) A Wiccan festival which celebrates the changing of the seasons.. A time of rejoicing and celebration, when no work is done, except in an emergency. (2) One of 8 holy celebrations of the Wiccan sually . (3) Wiccan celebration of an aspect of the Sun (God) as opposed to Esbat, the celebrations of the Moon (Goddess). There are 4 Greater Sabbats: Imbolc, Beltane, Lughnasadh, and Samhain. These are associated with agriculture and animal husbandry (domestic like cow, sheep). The 4 Lesser Sabbats are: Mabon, Midsummer, Ostara and Yule. These are connected to astronomical sually nce of Sun and related daylight hours. (4) “The Latin/French spelling for sabbats most closely associated with witchcraft. The sabbats are periods of time when witches gather for devotion to the mother goddess, nature, etc.” See witchcraft’ calendar.” (5) A Wiccan religious festival. (6) A Witchcraft Ceremony Of Honor Acknowledging The Eight Segments Of The Wiccan Year, The Cycle Of The Seasons, And The Influence Of Spirit In Our Lives. There Are Eight Sabbats, Also Called High Holy Days. (7) From the Greek word “sabbatu,” meaning, “to rest.” This word is used to apply to any of the eight solar festivals of the Neo-Pagan and Wiccan year, which are also known as the Days of Power. They originate from the days honoring the Solstices, Equinoxes and Celtic agricultural festivals. These are: Samhain, October 31st; Yule, Winter Solstice; Imbolc, February 1st; Ostara, Vernal Equinox; Beltaine, May 1st; Litha, Summer Solstice; Lughnassadh, August 1st; Mabon, Autumnal Equinox. (8) Any one of eight Wiccan solar festivals, marked by the 4 solstices and equinoxes, as well as 4 dates inbetween them. They are (Celtic style names, others exist) Yule, Imbolc, Ostara, Beltane, Litha, Lughnasadh, Mabon, and Samhain. (9) one of the Eight festivals or high holy days of Wicca. (10) A great festival of observance of the Pagan year (there are eight sabbats per year). The word is from the Greek sabatu meaning “to rest.” (11) A Solar Celebration; celebrated at each Solstice, Equinox [and often also on February 1st, May 1st, August 1st and November 1st] with a ritual. The word is derived from the Greek word “sabatu” meaning, rest. All sabbats begin at sundown on the eve before the dates given for them.
